Meteorological Information

Thermometers

In addition to the thermometers in the screen, there are wet and dry electrical temperature probes on the ground which are linked directly to computers in theoffice. These allow us to have a continuous display of air temperature, humidity maximum and minimum temperature.

The temperature on and below the ground differs significantly from the air temperature. For this reason we keep a record of the minimum temperature recorded each morning on the grass and the concrete. We also suspend thermometers in tubes in the ground at depths of 30cm and 1m. The bulbs of these thermometers are set in wax to make sure their response time is slow. This allows us to raise them to the surface without them reacting quickly to the air temperature.

The picture shows one of the met observers drawing the 1m thermometer up to take a reading.
